Eso 7 and 5.5 Collaboration with Doublsmm
For those who do not know I am working on some new bookshelf speakers for Doublsmm of YouTube. I am making him a full surround set of 5 speakers for his new house. The front 3 will be exactly the same using the 7" Dayton Esoteric driver with the 1" Peerless Corundum tweeter. The rears will use just substitute the 5 1/2" for the 7" esoteric. I must say first impressions of these drivers, are very nice! I am linking these a lot.
Saved for Final Measurements
I love doublemm videos. Your gonna collab awesome.
Yeah we are actually in the process of doing the build now. We've been talking about it for a while and just now have it set. We're each going to do something a little bit different with the drivers. Here's a sneak peek of one of my test boxes.
Here is the final response on the Eso 7. I am really pleased with them. In fact, I am listening to them now. These might just be my favorite bookshelf speaker I have designed. The below is an in-room response with room playing a role under 500hz.
P.S. the drop off past 12k is due to the amplifier and not the speaker. Unfortunately my testing amp died during the middle of designing these. This will be updated when I get a new testing amp.
The Esoterics have got to be some of the SEXIEST drivers out there, love em! I've got an older pair of the ES140's (prior to the design change) sitting in the closet that I need to get around to doing something with someday. Good luck on your build!
Thanks Kevin. I really love the Esoteric drivers. I was lamenting over the fact that I do not have any acrylic to put them in. It would be nice to see both of these drivers while in the enclosure. They are both beautifully engineered. It is too bad, that a lot of the engineering will be hidden.
New video out, showing off the build. Literally a video of me building the speakers.
Does your tape measure have both inches and millimeters? Also, that is an expensive workbench you have there... 😱😁
Haha, the tape measure I was using did have both mm and inches on it. This is the cheap one I got off Amazon. It works well for what I need. And that "expensive work bench 🤣 🤣 🤣 was given to me. It was a cheap particle board pool table. But it sure was better than working on it in the cold or reallt hot workshop 😀
Do you have some sample recordings available of the ESO 7? Reason that I ask is that my son, who is playing in a band, is looking for some monitors for his studio. These could be a good option.
I wish I did. It is just really hard to capture the recordings of speakers to accurately reproduce the sound. Especially with as much compression that happens now a ways. But if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them in any way that I can.
Yeah, always hard to record it as the room plays a role as well. Do you have e.g. a waterfallplot of the Eso’s?
The intention is to have a speaker in the studio, for listening back recording, monitoring and in time, also some mixing. The room is not too big, approx 4 by 3.5 m. The sound of the speaker for this purpose should be neutral, transparent and not too hard to drive at decent volumes (my son plays in a rockband..)
During my latest project I picked up the acoustic measurements also. I noticed that without acoustic treatment the room can be quite present in the results. So I have to work on that for my home office now as well.
by the way, do you have any experience with binaural recordings or microphones? This is probably one of the best ways to record a live listenig experience. But you will have to listen back with a pair of good headphones of course. This is also one of the next topics on my list.
