Hi DIY-Audio-Guy, I love your youtube channel and found they have been really useful in telling me about car-audio (as I am usually a home-audio guy), I know you also know about home audio but if you ever want any help I am on this forum very often! Have you ever thought about using mic measurements and bringing out a laptop with REW on it because many car manufacturers talk about how they have changed phase relationships of drivers in the rear to get higher and more even bass output in the front seats. I think it could be quite a nice experiment for you youtube channel! (if you like the idea)
Here is an example of an advanced piece of software that does what I explained in home theatres and certain high end car audio (I remember volvo being mentioned somewhere on the website?), it basically takes what I said to the next level, it uses 32bit processing changing phase relationships across the audioband using microphones, live to give the listener a flat response (even compensates for change in pressure (e.g. car window being open). Awesome, I have done a bit more research on dirac live and found a few interesting forums/articles as I am interested in the topic myself. I have found that miniDSP released a processor made for diy car audio enthusiasts so I thought I'd send a link on the product review: https://www.soundandvision.com/content/dirac-launches-dirac-live-processing-cars
It is quite expensive but is definitely a worthy audio upgrade especially for use in a car where there are so many problems with comb filtering, reflections and left/right balancing.
Before that product existed people used their other DSP products for car audio (the reason why they made this one), but here is a forum article I found on it:

Also, it is made for use with the Umik-1 so if you have that mic it will be even more beneficial. It will work with other mics though.

Also, even with how it looks, you can actually use the software with passive crossovers in place it just doesn't have quite as much control over the phase relationships around that crossover.
I'm hoping to get a car soon, so I can't wait until I finally get to work on car audio, it'll be a refreshing change to home audio.

Thanks for all of the information. I have a UMIK-1. It will probably be a while before I get around to getting a dirac/minidsp setup for the truck. But I will eventually need to go that direction. The Dayton DSP-408 is doing the trick, but I need more channels to do everything I want to do.
I did some testing and tuning yesterday, hope to get a video up. Next weekend. I am new to this tuning thing.
As part of the setup process I tested the RCA outputs of the DSP-408. It is only 2v preout and starts to clip at 54 on the main volume.
That sounds awesome, I can't wait for the vid. Where is the clipping occurring? At the DSP or head-unit? Either way I would put a volume limit on there so you can't accidentally turn it past the clipping point, especially important if other people use the system as they might not notice. As you probably know, clipping kills speakers and amps (usually more likely to be the amp). Just an idea, (might work might not) you could use a linear audio-grade resistor after the preout to reduce overall input voltage and heighten the clipping point? This would be next best case scenario if you preamp doesn't have a volume limiting option (variable output voltage regulation). Another reason I would do this is it can cause other problems (I can't remember what off the top of my head, I'll get back to you).
Glad to be of help. It literally is the best out there for quality, the way it optimises phase is insane! Of course it works best with active crossovers but it is nearly as effective with passives that are already in place. I'm pretty sure it is the only optimiser that does things as well as it does (with phase correction and so on...). If you want more information on it, I could practically write a book on it if I had the time XD
I have done a lot of research into the entire topic, I'm not a fanboy of Dirac, I like all good optimisers, Dirac just seems to be the best. Especially with their multisub phase management and correction coming out soon. Did I forget to mention it majorly improves a driver's impulse response too! It is insane.
My head unit (an Alpine) has a soft clip at max volume. The DSP-408 clips when the master volume is at 56 out of 65 (with the individual channel set to max volume). I am editing the video right now.... Hope to have it up by the end of the week.
