Hello, I’m new to the forum, but I have been spending some time looking at Toids Youtube videos.
I have 2 questions.
1. I’m torn between the BTS 15 and the Soundstage 15, Considering the price difference, which should I choose for my home stereo? I like to listen to many types of music, but a lot of classic rock, some electronic and reggae. I will also hook them up for movies and tv watching. I would like to connect them to a powerful class D amp and a Wiim pro plus streamer.
2. I think I can make some concrete spherical woofer enclosures and mount the horn on top of that, for an eclectic look and hopefully great sound. I would of course strive to match the volume of the woofer enclosure to the volume in the plans. This raises a sub question (pun), which would be the best direction of the port if it can’t be mounted in a strictly forward direction? It could fire towards the floor (spheres would be elevated on feet), or towards the back, or to the side, e.t.c.

April 17, 2024 at 10:06 pm #53651@Mthure This is a hard one. The better compression driver is the Textreme. But honestly, the Soundstage 15, has the much wider soundstage which I prefer for music. So if it were me, I would go with the Soundstage 15. They have a terrific sound to them and that soundstage is something that really takes you in when listening to music.

Hi Nick,
Must say love your work. I started making seakers (few years ago_ and used a active crossover (xilica). beyma 15lx60v2 + 40cm traxtric horn+beyma cp800 ti. I have rew and mic. I got the sound great for music. Really loved them. The highs were not great but oke (downside of big compression driver). Voices dead center and big big sound. But i also watch movies with no center speaker. With movie, dialogue disappeared in the background and i was disappointed and never could get it right. It made me turn up the volume knob in quiet scenes but when there was action scene the volume was way to loud.
then i came across you website and bought plans for the klipsch thx 650 replica. really like the speakers but when you are used to 15 inch you just miss the slam it can produce. So the klipsch are my rear speakers now and bought myself jbl 3677. The 3677 dont have the problem with the voices in movies. But they sounded a bit muddy (not detailed). I swapped out the horn and replaced the tweeter for (selenium dt220 and dayton h6512 waveguide). I know you cannot change drivers and horn and expect it to be good but it worked out pretty good. it opened up the speaker but still the speaker lacks a bit presence (not really forward sounding, like klipsch). I like the sound coming towards me.
so now with this background info comes the question.
should i go for the soundstage or bts15?
is the soundstage a bit forward sounding speaker because of the crossover at 1700 hertz? that is what i like.
how are the voices in movie without center channel with the soundstage 15?
i also like details in movie (wont the bts15 be better for detailed nuances in movie?
thanks for your work and effort.

I’m also wondering which would be the better of the two? I would like to build 3 for LCR and have them behind an AT screen. They will be used mostly for movies but also for blasting music. I want high SPL and good clarity..

I’m looking at the audience 212s now and thinking that “this is the way”
Are there any specifications available with regards to sensitivity etc? I’d be curious to know

May 10, 2024 at 3:24 am #53934The 12’s are rated at 98 dB as a single driver. When you put 2 on the baffle it raises the.spl by somewhere around.3-4 dB, which means.that together, they would be around 101-102 dB. The compression drivers are usually much higher generally starting around 108 + dB. I haven’t looked at the spec sheet, but you can see the general difference. That means you’ll have to base the overall on the lower number.
That being said the X-over would pad down the compression driver, and I can bet there’s probably a dB or 2 loss in the woofer section, so I’d feel safe to say that the overall system SPL is most likely around 100 dB.

Hello. Along the lines of soundstage applications, thoughts as to using them in an open pool house environment—walls on 3 sides and open on one. Considering building 5 as the speakers for a 5.1 like system. Also, can box dimensions be modified to do an in wall. For example, what is the minimum depth of the box? Be glad to pay for some help on this front.

Both Soundstage 15 as well as Audience 212 should be good candidates for the open pool setup. Try to pair them with a good amp that can provide enough juice. For a 5.1 system, you can build 3 of any of the above two options. For the surrounds, go for the Cinema 10 speakers. They are excellent speakers. Lastly, the .1 part, the subwoofer, there are a lot of options available. Some in this forum have built 21″ subwoofers, myself included. Nick has a build video for 21″ subs as well.
I have attached pictures of my cinema 10, my front sound stage with 3 Audience 212 and two 21″ subs. Let me know if you have any questions. I will be happy to help.

@Toids_DIY_Audio Maybe you can help with the custom box sizes part? Thanks, Nick!

Thanks Nate for your reply. Impressive setup you have! I was hoping to hear from Nick as to the possibility of a box reconfiguration
Here is a what I’m thinking for our poolhouse speakers, the cathedral ceiling roof rafter cavity (for two speakers ) and the wall cavity (for two speakers)would be the box. Keeping the same volume, length/ height would be approx 48” with a 14 1/2” width depending on depth. Is there a minimum depth so long as the the full range have 1/2” clear ace front to back?
I definitely do not want to screw up the sound but would love it if I could build them as in wall speakers.
Thanks for any input and advice.
