Build plan question
Posted by UnknownSpectre on September 12, 2023 at 1:51 pmI have found a speaker builder to make a set of three enclosures for me to use as my LCR in my home theater (not yet sure which design I will go with, but am highly leaning towards the Soundstage 15’s). Before purchasing the build plans, do you offer a version in metric units?

Update:
I “couldn’t wait” for a response, and just went ahead and ordered the plans and had them convert the measurements and move forward with building the cabinets.
It won’t be as precise, but fractions of cm’s should be negligible on the overall sound quality and characteristics.
-
Sorry, I somehow missed this. But, you are right I don’t offer them in Metric currently. It is something I want to do in the future if I can. I will say this, you picked great plans. You are going to love them!

All good. Thinking about it now, it’s kind of strange that they would even ask considering that calculators and computers are a thing… and that they use CNC for the cuts lol
Looking forward to getting in the cabinets soon, and then I’m waiting for upcoming sales to purchase the other materials through Parts Express. I’ll be sure to update along the way though!

Sweet! I am excited for this! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions along the way. Otherwise, I am stocked to see the project!
Don’t forget you can always use the code TOID to save 5% as well.

Using that code to grab clearance and open box items as I find them (Literally just snagged an enclosure for an UM18)… The big bulk purchases have to wait a bit for bigger sales though, but I’ll be sure to use your affiliate links when I can

I have the same question for the design of the 21″ Earthquake. I must use the metric system if I want ro send the files to a builder. Because of the differences I must edit the design in SketchUp free. Is that possible with the build plans? If the millimeters aren’t correct then the build is useless and my money down the drain (letting them build is not free ;-))
This is the one I am talking about.

It all gets wonky once you realize that the material thicknesses are different. It makes for some very strange measurements, that I suspect most humans would not be able to manually reproduce. Luckily, I found out my builders have a CNC.
-
Something to keep in mind, is the only thing important is the internal measurements, not the external. So you only need to make sure the internal measurements are the same. @UnknownSpectre is correct, that it can be wonky when changing between measurements in Sketchup. However, if you are having someone else build it from the plans, they should be able to convert the internal measurements fairly easily. I can send you the basic internal measurements if you want. And the bracing does not need to be in the exact position, it just needs to be close to the same placement. I hope this helps.
-
Thanks for the clarification, that I didn’t explain so well lol
Matching the external is the easy (easier) part; but between rounding the metric to imperial conversions, and material thickness difference (there is 18mm and 20mm mdf, but 3/4″ is in between, though not 19mm lol) internal volume can get pretty far off on medium to large sized builds.
*Maybe instead of making separate metric plans, just include the end volume after bracing and driver displacement on future builds?

That’s another good idea. I might need to try to figure out a different program that can easily change material thickness….
-

@toid you are totally correct about the internal measurements. The bracing is the most tricky and complex one. Changing from parametric to metric should be easy in SketchUp if the base material thicknesses is the same.
I would be happy with receiving the files of the Earthquake and looking into it. Letting a builder do it also would cost money, they charge by the hour. Also can I make a optical improvement by placing the back panel into the inclosure. I already have a design for an 21″ but it is without the bracing and maybe thicker material.
If I made the improvements then I will happy to share the design with you @toid. And I will build my own 21″ from that design.

@Asus Sure. Just send me your email and I’ll send them over for you.
Please send it in PM.

Another question:
What is the difference between “Back-Ordered” vs “Out of Stock” on Parts Express?
The D220Ti compression drivers are now listed as “Out of Stock”
-
Generally, Back Ordered means an order has been placed, but has not arrived yet.
Out of Stock means they do not have any available for sale and there has NOT been an order placed for re-stocking. Yet.
If you want the Straight Dope eight from the horse’s mouth, login to Parts Express and send the Sales Team an email. They do get back fairly quickly.
