So my friend asked me to come up with the cheapest surround sound set up that I could, he’s on a budget that doesn’t stretch to an AV receiver and name speakers, so after thinking on it I wondered if i could buy a small 5.1 amplifier board, but this ready made amp caught my eye. So if he buys this and I make him some small mtm sattalites that will have a power rating of 60watts, maybe slightly larger ones for the LF and RF channels after working out rough costs, I think i can get the whole system built for him for less than £500. Given the fact I haven’t used an amplifier like this before I wanted to get others opinion on the quality of the system this little amp could possibly produce.

I realise its meant as a kareoke amp and that it doesnt support dolby (that i can see) but for use as a surround sound for movies and music im wondering if it will do the job. If not, can anyone recommend a small unit/board that will? That could possible include dolby?

Well, there’s not a lot of info on this unit. The most I found is here. No clue as to what surround type it is, though they usually have to pay for licensing of branded surround. And it’s not a 5.1, but only a 5 channel. With all that, I’d be somewhat suspect of the power ratings too. Would it work? Yes. Will it work well and last? I have no clue.

Have you poked around AliExpress? They have some similar types around the same price. For example:

Thanks for taking the time to look properly at that for me, I had seen the 5.1 and assumed the .1 was indicating a sub out, not sure why they call it a 5.1 then lol. I hadnt found those amps during my search so thanks, ill take a look at them when im home from work. Im actually surprised that this type of amplifier is so hard to find, the 2x50watt amps are all over the place but a dedicated little dolby surround amp doesnt seem to exist, i imagine a lot of people without the money to buy AV receivers would go mad for those. Buy a set of cheap speakers and the amp and you could have full surround sound for not a lot of money.

In regards to the one i linked, i couldn’t find much info on it either, so ill probably give it a miss

Woah! False advertisement at it’s best! Good catch with the 5.1 actually just a 5 channel. I didn’t even notice that. You could still use a subwoofer with it but using something like the SPA250 and run speaker wire in and out of the subwoofer. But I’m all actuality, I’m with you and hesitant on it’s or performance/reliability. I try to stay away from anything with spring terminals. Receivers of spring terminals on them, almost always scream of low quality.

PS, you’re on a roll. Even noticed no licensing by Dolby or DTS. Killing it!

One other thing to keep in mind when looking at a 5.1 receiver is that you want it to have digital inputs. Now that can be a digital coax, digital fiber optic or HDMI. I’m not seeing any of those units offering that. So keep in mind even if you get a 5.1 channel receiver. If you feed it stereo, you’ll never truly get 5.1 sound. You may want to take a look at the website accessories for less. Day often have some inexpensive name brand receivers for a good price.

Thank you, ill bear all of that in mind, i hadn’t realised about the hdmi/optical issue not giving true surround sound, so yeah thats another thing that might let down the over all quality of anything i put together for him. I really cant believe there isn’t a small amplifier knocking about that has dolby and the needed digital in connections, i know at least 3 people who would benefit from that being a thing you could buy. It wouldn’t even need the bells and whistles since i never use the things that are built in on my reciever, i just use it for sound and that’s basically it. iF ONLY i knew how to build one myself i could make a fortune lol

If you look on AliExpress, they have 5.1 decoders that have optical, coax and regular inputs, and they are anywhere from ~$14-$30, some a bit more. And a number of them say Dolby. I haven’t even looked at any other surround options yet, so there may be more. It pays to throw a search term in and see what pops up.
