Gents, forgive my lack of knowledge if this is a silly question however, to the best of my knowledge most hifi woofers are limited by excursion and not so much power rating, if that is the case and I build some mains that are capable of playing down to 80hz then pair the mains up with some subs that are happy to play up to 200hz without horrible off axis responce, would I be able to squeeze a bit more volume out of the mains if I put a high pass on the woofer section of the mains and limit their low end to say 120hz instead of allowing them to play down to 80hz then just allow the subs to play up to 120hz?

@123toid It’s in relation to that speaker designe I spoke with you about a few days ago, with the two Tang Band W6’s, and two stereo powered subs. I have a NAD C658 DAC/streamer/pre-amp as my source which has Dirac Live integrated so I will have some EQ capabilities. I was just wondering if I limit the low end on the W6’s and cross them with the subs at 120hz instead of say 80hzs, will the overall spl of the system increase?

Got you. If it is that one, then I wouldn’t run powered subwoofers beyond 120hz. Past that it gets directional, plus subwoofers can have distortion issues playing that high, even if it looks like they can via the frequency response.
Those W6’s have really good excursion and power handling capabilities, especially if crossing over at 120hz. What are your SPL requirements? Why do you think the W6 won’t get you there. Or maybe stated differently how are you going to be using these?
If those don’t fit your SPL needs, I would look at PA drivers instead.

Thanks Nick, mostly music but movies occasionally as well. I like to play movies pretty loud so I just want to maximise what I can get out of those w6’s without having to resort buying larger or more expensive drivers.

We are talking about the W6-1721 correct? If so, 10 feet away at max RMS power for two woofers is over 100dB. In room will be even more. I’m not sure how loud you listen to them, but that is really loud, actually way too loud for a lot of people.
