      Hi,

I’m a hobbyist woodworker and am just getting into speaker building, the more I read and watch on the subject the more I start to think “maybe I should just go Sonos” 🙂 But I’m going to stick with it and see how I go. I’ve got 2 young kids, a 4 year old girl and 6 year old boy so spare time is at a premium right now, whenever I do get a minute I like to escape to the sanctuary that is my garage, sometimes even book a day off work to get some peace and work on some projects. I mainly build stuff we need around the house, foot stall, coffee table, picture frames etc but I did make a bluetooth speaker for the kitchen last year. It runs a little Sanwu amp board and goes for about 15 – 20 hours off a single 18650 battery, charges from a phone charger, it was a fun little thing but needless to say it’s not very loud. So for the next build I’m hoping to make some speakers for the tv.

Anyway, that’s me, thanks for taking a look.

Good way to hop into the hobby. If you can wire up some switching jacks to the TV speakers, you wouldn’t need anything other than the new speakers. The onboard amps in TVs usually have more than enough power when mated to a much more efficient speaker than what’s built in.

When my kids were little, there wasn’t any time for anything, but I wouldn’t trade the time I spent with them for anything. It goes by so quick.

So, welcome! And here’s to finding an hour or two from time to time. 👍

Thanks, I have a Sure bluetooth board with a 3.5 mm input so am aiming to use that with a cable from the headphone jack, are there any issues with doing this? I will post a separate thread on the build shortly.

Yeah agree about the kids, I’m torn between sometimes wanting my own downtime and then feeling guilty that I’m not doing enough with the kids. You can’t win 🙂

@edfuller I completely understand that feeling.  I have a 3 and 1 year old.  I love spending time with them.  IN fact, I let them help (or at least let them think they are helping).   It really is a lot of fun.  I am hoping that my kids will join me in this hobby, maybe someday we can build at least a box that they will be proud of and carry on to college and beyond.

It sounds like you already have the building and electronics expertise.  I can’t wait to see where you go with it.

Thanks, yeah I try to get him involved too, if it’s anything too intricate or dangerous (router table etc) then I give him a block of wood, some screws and the impact driver, that keeps him happy for a few minutes. I keep an eye on him to make sure he’s not drilling through his hand or something but he’s generally pretty good. He gets bored of what I’m doing though so usually toddles off after a while. I’ve got a kitset bird box that I’ll build with him too, was thinking of sticking a raspberry pi in it with an infrared camera so we can see what’s going on inside… we do have a cat though so I’ll have to place the box strategically or we might capture some disturbing footage!
