Well it stinks, but my Table saw finally bit the dust.  I haven’t opened it up to see exactly what is wrong with it yet, but I know it isn’t good.  So it looks like I’ll hit the auction tomorrow to see if I can get a good deal on a table saw.  I’ll update with more info.  But this puts a hamper on some projects.

Aw man, that sucks for sure!!!  If you can find a good deal on a Sawstop saw, their quality is fantastic and the safety feature is nice too (I ran my thumb into my previous saw). Good luck regardless. If you need, I could cut some stuff and you could pick it up on your way to Tennessee! 😁

I went to an auction to get a nice Jet table saw.  But they ended up starting the auction 1/2 hour early and started with that and some other tools I wanted.  So I missed out.  Luckily, I was able to fix it last night.  So yeah!  Looks like my next upgrade for the shop will be this fence system.   I have heard nothing but great things from it.

Incra makes some fantastic stuff, that’s for sure!!!  That would be a fantastic fence!  What was wrong with your saw? (I’m curious now!)

      Which begs the question:

How much wood would a toid saw cut if a toid’s saw couldn’t cut wood?

      @lindelium18 and @cap

Haha, you guys are too much.  You are going to laugh at me.  Basically I was moving my saw to the 45 position when I heard a snap.  I turned on the saw and sure enough it was barely rotating and would get bogged down whenever I added wood to it.  I was too frustrated knowing I only had a few days left to get my house ready to even look at it.  So I did the basics, unplug it, reset it, etc, to no avail.

The other night I finally got to look at it.  Now I have an air filtration system hooked up to it., but I typically keep it closed, since the CNC is running off the same hose.  I just open up whichever I am running.  I have never had issues, so I assumed it was all working fine.  I finally opened it up to see the outlet for the air filtration had clogged…a while ago!  And so, none of the saw dust was actually leaving the saw, but instead piled up inside.  The snap, was actually a small piece of wood that fell down while cutting something.  So I unclogged it and sucked out as much as possible.  Then it fired right on up.  Look liek I need to keep a closer eye on that outlet.

Good to know your table saw is still working. That fence you linked to looks great.

Are you guys liking table saws or track saws for speaker building?

      I mean…both is the best answer!  🙂

I think it comes down to dedicated space and your needs the majority of the time. I do a fair amount of woodworking outside of speaker building. I’ve built a decent amount of our living room furniture. All that and I don’t own a track saw. There are times I wish I had one but I’ve never not been able to complete a project without it. But, I have a dedicated workshop in the basement. If space were at a little more of a premium, you can do most of the same things with a track saw and it takes up a lot less space.

So, if I had to pick just one and space was less of an issue, I’d go with a table saw. If money were no object but I had limited space, I’d own one of the Festool track saws. And if I were broke and had no space, I’d make my own track saw out of two pieces of mdf and an inexpensive circular saw with a really good blade.

I like my table saw better personally, but there can be some great advantages to an accurate track saw when breaking down 4×8 stock.  I agree with @lindelium8 in the fact that I have never needed a track saw.  I would personally have a nice accurate table saw and fence. You are going to need repeatable accurate cuts that a table saw gives you.

@bjaurelio I agree.  I really like that fence a lot.  I know a few woodworkers that use it and are still in awe of it. It is definitely on my list of upgrades….When I’ll get to it….who knows?

Thanks for your guy’s input. I’m actually downsizing to a jobsite table saw from a hybrid. Just to get some garage space back and thinking maybe a track saw might be in my future.

You guys ought to see my table saw. I think you’d be impressed what can be done with it. (Amazed might be the word…)

Deal is, you’ll have to wait til I get back from vacation to see it. 😀

Well this has been a fun week.  I fixed my saw, only to drop my phone today in a place I can’t get it back.  Luckily it was an old phone that was completely paid off.  But it looks like a new phone is in order.  And with it being Labor day, there looks to be some sales on the Google Pixel 3 and XL.  So I may just go that route.  I really only care about the camera anyway.

Well that stinks! Hope you were using auto-cloud backup for your media.

Like you said, there’s LOTS of sales on this weekend. I know I’ve tossed at least 3 or 4 emails for Best Buy in 2 days.

Sorry about the phone. Table saws are what’s important anyway

Look out for those deep stinky holes Nick. 🤔 to reach in and grab it or not.

Okay, that’s enough of a teaser. This is my table saw.

Table dimensions approximately 10″ x 14″. That’s a 6′ blade, belt driven by the Packard motor that was with it when I bought it off my original boss back in the 80’s. Believe it or not, he used it to build his house in the 60’s, and it was an old, used saw then.

Let me know when you’ve had your chuckle. I don’t mind. I laugh when I have to use it for some semi precise large cuts.

P.S. I’ve got a drill press as equally impressive that I bought from him at the same time. 😁

Okay, that is funny.  However, I always like those.  Easy to change out the motor and add a new belt if ever needed.

There’s 2 custom pieces on there.

The first is the switch box. When I got the saw, the only way to turn it off and on was to plug it in. I used a power strip for a while, but the amount of chips that would get in the other outlets was concerning. So I built a switch box that is held on by keyholes and screws on the base. Power is easy access and easy to repair if needed.

The second is that little strip of wood that runs parallel to the left of the belt. The way the whole setup works is that the weight of the motor (and it is pretty heavy) keeps tension on the belt. The mounts for the motor are just “U” brackets that the bar mount on the motor sits in. This has worked fairly well until the last time I needed to use it. For whatever reason, the motor would pop out of those open mounts and fall to the floor. That strip of wood now clamps the bar to the U mount under the pulley, while leaving enough leeway for motor pivot. Haven’t had an issue since.
