March 18, 2024 at 8:32 pm #53361Ignore the name for now, it is just a thought. If you have a better idea, let’s hear it.
Overview
I have been wanting to do something similar to the Audience 212, but smaller. Also one that could be used as a center channel (horizontally) with good off axis response. I also wanted to work at getting a lower crossover point. An of course, if it is to be used for Home theater, it needs to be able to handle high dynamics. With this in mind let’s take a look at the proposed parts.
Parts
1 – RCF Constant Directivity Horn
1 – Custom crossover
Why these Parts?
The woofers can handle high dynamics with high power output. Technically 4Kw, but let’s be honest no one will be using anywhere near that power for a home theater.
The Textreme is one of those drivers that can go lower than most other compression drives while maintaining very low distortion and good power handling. When you add it to the RCF horn it can be crossed over as low as 500hz. Although, I will probably cross it over a little higher than that.
Speaking of the horn, the RCF is a 90 x 50. The horn is designed to have a square shape. This means that you can easily unbolt the horn, flip the orientation to change the speaker from a vertical MTM to a horizontal at anytime. Since you are not moving the compression drivers place in the cabinet, there is no need for a crossover change or adjustment.
Box design
It is not completely narrowed down, but here is an idea of what it might look like.

March 18, 2024 at 8:37 pm #53364Sweet! Looking forward to a new build project from you!
How do you expect this to differ from a horizontal Audience 212?
-
March 18, 2024 at 8:40 pm #53365@UnknownSpectre well these will be much smaller. Additionally, since the ports are on both sides, it helps even out the dispersion. You could place and audience 212 on it’s side, I just wouldn’t personally do that.
-
March 18, 2024 at 8:51 pm #53367Well I’m glad I’ve waited because I was going to put an Audience 212 on it’s side 🤣. This could be my last speaker build for a while. Timeline on development?

March 19, 2024 at 5:00 am #53371Not sure yet. Probably a month or two before everything is really ironed out. But who knows maybe it’ll be sooner.

@Toids_DIY_Audio if you want design this speaker in fusion 360 (if I remember correctly you said something like this on your livestream) i’m happy to give you a overview of all this essential things and if you want even how to set up your CNC routs directly in fusion. I’m using it since 2019 for all my projects and CNC routing ;).
We could hop on a zoom call and I can walk you though, if you like.

March 20, 2024 at 7:59 am #53394I would definitely be interested in that. I really want to learn Fusion 360. But it’s been quite a steep learning curve. Partially due to my uneasiness with the cam side. But I could definitely use some help.

March 20, 2024 at 3:19 am #53388I’ve just given a peek at the drivers and horn… quite pricey! WHEW! But, whatevs lol
This will be a 2.5-way?
-
March 20, 2024 at 8:02 am #53395It will be a 2-way MTM. The cost of the drivers is a little bit more than some of my other builds, but I believe the cost will be well warranted. But we will find out once it’s finished being built. But I like the idea of the woofers being able to handle more power. That should allow them to have a very low distortion and play very cleanly. I think the crossover point will be somewhere between 500 to 700 Hz. So no real reason to go anything more than a two-way.

March 20, 2024 at 8:03 am #53398Did some mockups today on the CNC with the horn. I wanted to make sure that it would actually fit both directions. So far everything is coming together, really nicely. No I just had to finish designing the speaker and of course the crossover. There’s actually quite a bit of work left, but it’s nice to see it come together.

sweet. the Audience 212 are in my plans further down the road i will be keeping an eye on this thread.
also if fusion 360 is somewhat overwhelming try looking at shapr3d eve since i got a 3d printer my wife and kids find it much easier to use than fusion 360

Hi Mr Toids ,
Hope everything is going well there with you , family and your wonderfull projects.
I m Miguel Angelo from Portugal. After almost a year thinking on upgrading my svs ultra lcr … and always seeing wonderfull speakers and subwoofers there in USA that is impossible to get here on Europe … i already started giving up of my dream ( have something like the jtr 212htr ) … many times almost decided to go with the Arendals 1723 thx or JBL HDI 3800 … never liked very much the feedback of the arendals for cinema vs something like JTR … and the jbl hdi 3800 , are the nearest i could get to the best cinema type of experience ( with horn and compression drivers) …
Sorry for my English … is not the best , but i really think you are almost the only one that could help me with my dream , and i m very neewbie about diy ( but i dont have problems with a saw , or follow schematics ).
Before i quit of my dream of have something like the JTR … i started looking in the DIY world … and i find your youtube Channel of Toids DIY Audio , more specific this video ”
How to Build $14,000 speakers for $1,300! JTR 212 Inspired – The Audience 212”
After rewatch the video 10 times and search more about the Audience 212 project ,you really inspired me to try doing the same.i really love action movies and the most cinematic experience , i cant tell i m not happy with the svs utra speakers .. but always dreamed have something with a more Cinematic Sound and look and i believe after everything i read that compression driver + horn is the way …I m really hapy to find your videos , and now i find this site and the forum . And i just found this thread that is almost like you have read my mind New Speaker Design – Eminence Center of Attention! …i really love this design more than the big 212 … it will be easyer to put behind an acustic screen , or use horizontal with normal screen ( the central speaker ) until i get an acustic screen … but i almost started the 212 project … and was searching a way to talk with you about some doubts … like… if it was now , you will still use the some woofers and compression driver ? now i saw this new optionsParts
1 – RCF Constant Directivity Horn
and i would sugest and ask ( because is so much easyer to find in europe and also cheaper) , if is not a good idea use theSB Audience NERO-12MWN400D Mid-range Woofer?? you are not happy with this driver anymore ? and about the compression driver … was this a good optionSB Audience ROSSO-65CDN-T Titanium with theHORN H280 ? is very hard to get the Eminence Brand here on europe … and for this price of ( eminence) … maybe a version more high end with the BMS4593he would be a nice option to go a steep further ? and make it a 2.5 way speaker ? with a very nice crossover with very god parts ? i m very happy and excited to find this new project . And thinking in the future ( the surrounds and atmos speakers ) … maybe was a good idea to use the some horn + compression driver + a 10 woofer of the some brand to match ? looking to value/ price … i started to like sb audience after i searched about them … but i dont know how they sound and durabilty …
Best reagards from Portugal

April 24, 2024 at 5:38 am #53747@Darknightsw Those are some good questions. I really do like the SB Audience. They are great drivers. I choose the Eminence for the power rating and the compression driver. The Textreme driver is unlike any other compression driver I have heard. It sounds more like a dome tweeter, yet still has the great sensitivity and clean sound of a compression driver. It has honestly become my go to. I did speak with Eminence and they recommend going to their site and seeing which distributors are near you. Any of the distributors should be able to get you drivers no problem. Assuming I understood correctly.
I am really excited about this build and hope I can get to it soon. It is almost completely designed. BUt tomorrow, I am going to try my hardest to finish my Atmos build. This is the next one after that.

Any updates on these?
Really interested in these. I was looking to build the BTS15 but these look to be an awesome speaker as well.

@Toids_DIY_Audio Really looking forwards to seeing this design, any update on when we can expect to see it? I plan to build BTS 15’s as my left and right channel and hopefully use this as a centre, but waiting for this to be released before pulling the trigger on the BTS 15’s.
Thanks!

October 7, 2024 at 4:42 pm #55338I am so sorry. This year has been incredibly stressful and busier than I could have ever imagined. Projects that take a month end up taking 3. I don’t even want to guess on a timeline. What I will say is that it is being cut out later this week. Depending on how that goes, will help with an idea of how the rest will go. I appreciate the patience. And apologize for the delay.

Totally understand about this year. I think for a lot of us it’s been a similar situation. Glad that this is still on your list!
Based on your review of the compression driver I have been looking for an end game LCR setup using them.
In the meantime as you work on this, is it safe for those of us interested to start buying the drivers/horn? Meaning, you won’t change the drivers and we will have time to buy as our paydays allow 😂.
Maybe even catch a Black Friday deal or two….

December 7, 2024 at 1:12 am #55931I wouldn’t yet. I bought a different horn to see if it would work bettr and I think it will. It is still and RCF, but the 90×40, which I am hoping to time align with the woofers.
