First the main burning question I have is: What is the impedance of this speaker. My home theater box needs 6 ohms to 16 ohms impedance and the only reference in the plans I can find is on the Wiring Diagram where it states below the power amp “100W 4 ohm” If I try to calculate (crudely) I am coming up with less than 3 ohms from the components. Help me out here. Another question is the parts list states I need two 3 ohm resistors, but the schematic only shows one in use. And lastly, this is a design question I guess, why is a 10w resistor chosen over say the 20w. Thanks for your responses!
BTW I am planning to replace a DefTech ProCenter C2 with the Rule Breaker.

Ok, I understand, I asked totally NOOB questions. Further research on my part has answered or at least enlightened me at to the path of answers. As to the Impedance question, it complicated. From what I gather looking at the crossover schematic the design specs are 4 Ohms. I may have to add resistors to modify but I am extremely worried about changing the design. From what I gather, I “should” be OK according to multiple YouTubers. As to component design questions, after looking into Xsim and others, the choices are what they are for cost focus. as much as audio quality results. Not even Electrical Engineers want to do the math if they don’t have to.
If anyone has any other input on this build – TIPS AND TRICKS – I would appreciate it. Otherwise I apologize for showing in public my shear NOOBNESS on this subject.

January 25, 2024 at 1:00 am #52675@SirStorm You shouldn’t need to do anything to the impedance. I understand your concern, but you need to remember that impedance is variable. Meaning even if a speaker is labeled 4ohm, it may rarely hit 4ohm. Not to mention your crossover point will also affect this. If you are using these as intended (ie crossover between 80-120hz). Your receiver should be fine with it. I have used it on receivers that state only 8 ohm load and they work fine. However, you should always err on the side of caution. Most receivers will have a protect mode, which will shut off if needed. In this case, it would shut off the receiver if the load is too much.

Thank you. I will post a picture when I am finished. So far I have been making templates and an enormous amount of research. Not that I need another obsession, uh, I mean, hobby!. A question that has popped up is if I put the crossover inside of the speaker enclosure, will that significantly reduce the enclosure volume recommended for the speaker? And if the crossover is moved external to the speaker enclosure, will that have a negative effect on the design performance? Since the Rule Breaker has such a small volume unlike a tower….

January 25, 2024 at 5:27 am #52681If you need anything from me, let me know. As far as the crossover components, that was a mistake that it read 2. There should only be 1 per speaker. The wattage of the inductor is fine in this build. If you wanted to use a 20w, it would not hurt though.

All finished! Hope you like the way it turned out. I even found a way to credit TOIDS. Sadly, I don’t get to enjoy it long, I made it as a gift for my brother-in-law.
I have more build pictures if anyone wants to see them (no CNC or laser used)
Next one is for me!!!

I am looking to add a center channel as well to my 5.1 home theatre. Mainly for dialogue which is really bad watching movies and TV over my HT. Does the Rule Breaker provide enough dialogue? If so, I would be looking to build this in the 8 ohm version.
Thank you,
Mark

February 13, 2024 at 8:18 pm #52937hello, I am going to attempt to try and build this, what type of material or wood did you use for the box itself?
-
I used 3/4 inch MDF because I already had remanent. Take a look at my other post, I put pictures of my progression in it. The design uses 1/2 inch material. As for the wood, I used thick (3./16th inch) veneer apple wood from a tree in my yard. That had been sitting in my shop for about 4 years. In the end, building the housing with end cuts presented is a pain to finish nice. If you build a box with mitered corners it will finish much easier. I just wanted something more unique looking than a box.

Ok, new question. The design has the BMR centered and centered. Does the BMR also break the tweeter placement “rules” of needing to be offset? And in the case of this speaker design (The Rule Breaker) would raising the BMR, say level with the mids, upset the sound design of the project?
-
February 17, 2024 at 1:41 am #53018It would. You do not want to change it’s relative baffle placement.

Looking at the rule breaker for a home theater set up 9 in total. How do these sound? How Would these compare to box store set? Would I get an Atmos DTS experience placed correctly with a good receiver? Toid’s review was great and his explanation was information. Just looking for feedback and a comparison before i dump slot of time and money into a project and my expectations and home theater goals are out of proportion and not met. Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated. My thoughts are for 80 bucks a pop can I realy go too wrong?? Thank you in advance for your time and patience helping to educate a noob

December 17, 2024 at 6:32 am #56002I’ve put out some requests for help for you, to TOID and Elliot, the 2 gents that designed the Rule Breaker. Hopefully, we’ll hear from one or both soon.

Sorry for the late reply! Haven’t been active for a while, that needs to change!
I may be a bit biased, but I’d say these blow any box set out of the water, and and when you account for the cost to make them, then even moreso. Because of those BMR drivers you’ll also get a very encompassing sound stage and their wide dispersion characteristics seem to make them better in more acoustically challenged rooms is what I have found. And really high praise from me for using the exact same speaker all around, it’s definitely one of the things I highly recommend doing when building out a home theatre.
Just be sure to also buy/build at least one subwoofer for those very low frequency (I say at least one, because the more subs you have, (typically) the better the distribution of bass you have (to a point). – this goes for any system you get, but you can probably get away with not including one for a bit if you have to save. You just won’t be getting those ultra ultra lows yet.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Hope this helps!

I was just on the Parts Express website and the key BMR for this speaker is “No Longer Available”
So first, does anyone have contacts to see if this is temporary or a permanent discontinuation?
Secondly, Is anyone willing to revisit this design with a replacement driver for the BMR that is now unattainable? The other BMRs that are still for sale do not have the same curves so the crossovers will need to be reworked.
Sad because I was just getting ready to build a set for my son.
-
February 15, 2025 at 12:35 am #56774“Clearance” and “No Longer Available” means that’s the end of the line for that particular driver. There “may” be a replacement coming, but you’d have to reach out to either Parts Express or Tectonic. There is, however, the 3-1/2″ version available.
-
I hadn’t even noticed until your message that they had been discontinued, how unfortunate! Annoyingly, the remaining BMRs don’t really compete, and the design is based on the premise of a good mode-controlled driver. Looking at Tectonic’s website, they plan to release BMR-k drivers this year, which are their new advancement. If they’re good, I’ll look into designing a version with them.
