I really need a new testing amplifier, but I didn’t want to go out and buy one.  I really wanted to build one.  Since Parts Express started selling IcePower modules, I have been really excited.  They are really nice class D amplifiers.  Some companies even use some of their modules in their HiFi lines.  Now for testing purposes, I don’t need much, so I decided on the ICEpower 50ASX2SE and a Ghent Audio case with premade wires.  I just got the amplifier in today!  Unfortunately, I am still waiting on the case.  But I figured, I would show off some pictures of the amplifier.

Nick, this will be similar to the other build you have a YouTube video on, the 300 watt version, but smaller? Will you be adding any other options like Bluetooth, maybe?  Is that even possible with the Ice amps? Admittedly, I’m ignorant to all the options for DIY amps.

It will be very similar.  I am not sure I’ll make a video on this one, but I might.  I think with this amplifier, it would be better to add an external bluetooth that would hook up via RCA.  I don’t think I would hook it up internally, since the ice has it’s own built-in power supply.  Someone, else might be offer a different solution though.  I probalby won’t add bluetooth, but if I were,it might be something like this.

Sounds good. I seldom use Bluetooth but my son likes the flexibility of controlling everything from his phone. An external option would work fine. Good luck on the new amp, looking forward to following along and hearing your thoughts on how it performs.

ICE power is definitely great stuff.  But if your budget is tight, you might also consider this…

      Or this one, without bluetooth…

I’ve used both and they’re really quite good.

Thank you for the recommendation. I love smsl, but I’ve never use Fosi before. Good to know there’s another good amplifier out there for decent price.

It gets a bit confusing because a lot of these little Chip Amps are sold under different names … for example the Senucn A502 is also sold as the DilvPoetry v50 at wildly different prices.  Some Fosi products are also sold as Nobsound but with cheaper or no power bricks.  If you have a decent SMPS power brick on hand, you can save a few bucks.

It’s a shame that audiophiles have largely snubbed class D and these little amps in particular. Some of them are truly impressive and if you don’t need hundreds of watts they will stand up beside some of the so-called high end stuff quite nicely. If you can get it sorted out, there are some very good buys in these little amps.

The ICE modules coming on the open market are going to turn the heat up on the High End market quite nicely. There are already Chinese amps available using them at 1/3 the price of the high end models like PS Audio’s stellar and Sprout lines.

And then there’s Crown. Once the king of analog, now delving into Class D with their XLS amps that sell for around $500.

This is going to be a very interesting year for audio enthusiasts.  I’ll be looking forward to the details on your new ICE project…

Nick, have you given any thought to an amp with a built in Mini-DSP module?  Not sure if there are any cases available that could accommodate 4-channel output and the DSP module. Granted Mini-Dsp offers two-channel plate amps that go in the back of cabinets, but it takes two of them for a pair, kind of expensive that way.  When you think about it, you really only need one DSP and amplification for two speakers. I don’t recall seeing an all-in-one solution from a more traditional case mounted amplifier.  If there’s a kit out there, I would be interested, thanks.

That is a great idea Kevin.  I had been eyeing up the Dayton Audio DSP.  But I haven’t bit the bullet yet.  I did see that Sure amplifiers have a DSP option to programtheir amplifiers.  I have thought about that a few times as well.  I may get one sometime to play around with for the channel.  I wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested in those.  I really wish Dayton Audio started selling that series.  I am pretty sure the KAB boards are sourced from sure.  Maybe, while at MWAF, I’ll sneak the idea to some of their buyers, haha. I jsut don’t know many people willing to order a small amount from China.

I completed this today.  I must say, I really love that Ghent Audio has the pre-made cables already pinned with the appropriate terminals.  The only parts that needed to be soldered is the RCA connections (no balanced connections for this amplifier) and the binding posts.  Other than that, it is all plug and play.  It’s a really nice kit especially for beginners that do not want to design, but just want a great sounding amplifier.  The  only issue is that the case is considerably larger than the amplifier board.  It would have been nice, if they left enough room to put two of these boards in there, that way you could buy two of the bridged versions and install them in one case.

Here are some final pictures.  More to come.

Seriously.  NExt time my complains about the heat, I’ll ask if she wants some ICE and just turn the music on 😆  She probably will not find that as funny as me.

Cool little amplifier project Nick! What would the retail price for all the components involved be for the average DIYer?

Kevin, it is not bad at all.  I just ordered this board along with this case with the premade cables.  For around $208.  It was all plug and play, minus soldering the RCA wires.  Just keep in mind this is just a testing amp for me, so it is low power.  50Wx2 @4ohm and 22Wx2 @8ohm.  Not not very powerful.  ANd the case was actually much bigger than it needs to be, which surprised me.  I haven’t measured it, but it looks like you could put two in the case.  Which makes me think if you wanted to put two of these (would have to drill some holes in the case) to give you a 150Wx2 amplifier with each side having it’s own dedicated power supply.   But for a testing amp, that would be overkill for me.

You’re welcome.  They really are nice.  THey have become my new testing amplifiers.
