I’m relatively new to the DIY world only having built a pair of DINA’s (which are phenominal btw, I LOVE THEM)! I’ve been slowly ordering speakers to build a home theater with Atmos set-up. I found some 4″ woofers on PE during the summer for pretty cheap and I’m TRYING to design a center channel to put them in. They are the Dayton Audio 4″ DS115-8 for like $15 /ea…I ordered (6). I was thinking of doing a center cannel much like PE’s AudioBar 1.5 way center channel – as far as asthetics. I was trying to design them with a passive radiator they have that matches the 6 speakers I got…DS115-PR. I don’t know enough about what I am reading with specifications to know if these speakers are any good, but I have them and want to use them.
I’ve been trying to use WinISD to figure out the size of enclosure and the proper tuning, proper weight for the PR, but I feel like I’m grasping at straws at this point and like everything is a variable. I don’t know what I need to make a constant so I can figure the remainder out. Do I nail down an enclosure size, the tuned Hz, the mass on the PR??? I feel like I’m at a fork in the road with 10 different paths to take…frustrating. A lot to unpack there.
Let me give you a brief background of what I’m planning on building.
LR – I’d like to do towers…I am still planning on building a clone of the SVS Pinnacles I posted about a couple months ago, but can stray from this idea as I will be pleased with something that sounds great and has a more simplistic athestic.
Sub(s) – I found a design that looks much like an SVS PB16 sub w/ 3 ports – I’ll be using the Dayton Audio UM18-22 18″ Ultimax DVC Subwoofer 2 ohms Per Coil…I’ll be starting out with 1, but will add a second once I save enough for it. They will be tuned to about 28Hz.
I’ve put much thought into doing either your Cinema 10 or Cinema 6 designs for the surrounds, but I almost feel those would be overkill and more designed for the LCR’s, is that correct? Maybe some simple bookshelfs.
I am planning on upgrading my AVR from a 5.1 Yamaha to an 7.2.4 AVR with Atmos (either Denon or Marantz) ….LRC. LS, RS, LRearS, RRearS, (2) subs, and (4) ceiling mounted.
I purchased the Eminence <yt-formatted-string force-default-style=””>F110M-8 with the Beta 10CX for 2 of the 4 Elevation surrounds for Atmos (again, will add the other (2) in time). I thought there was a build video and plans for those but can’t seem to find those currently, either on this website or on Youtube.</yt-formatted-string>
Bottom line, I am trying to slowly build up my BUDGET yet great sounding theater. I don’t have a separate dedicated theater room, and will be using my open concept living space that is open to both dining room and kitchen. I currently have a Bose Acoustimass 15 from 2000. It has served it’s purpose for those 22 years, but I want better sound separation and more of a full spectrum sound, and better quality.
I guess I’m asking for some pointers to nail down an overall design of the center speaker for now since I currently have these speakers and would like to start building something.
