Being on this forum, you may have come across the discussion on Soundstage 15 speakers. We all are impressed with the quality & the clarity of sound from the speakers. These speakers are so good that it sounds silly to think about improving or changing the design. Like they say – Don’t fix something that ain’t broken. But maybe it’s an American trait or that creativity itch in us that makes us constantly tweak & change things!
There have been talks of making Soundstage 215, similar to the hugely popular Audience 212. Instead of one 15″ driver, the proposed Soundstage 215 will have two, while keeping the rest of the components the same. Josh @Chedwin created a box design as well as changes in the crossover. He will be driving this thread with his proposed changes to the build plan. Since the new design is based on Nick’s @Toids_DIY_Audio build plans, anyone interested in building Soundstage 215 will need to buy the build plans.
Take it away Josh!

May 13, 2024 at 11:46 pm #53946Sweet, sweet temptation!
The idea of having two of these as front Left and Right while I continue to use one SS15 as a center, and repurpose two SS15’s as surrounds… Very tempting!
Ooooooh, it would also free up my two sealed Ultimax’s to be re-positioned elsewhere in order to even out bass response.
I saw mentions elsewhere in the forum about a possible SS215 center channel as well? Is that a part of this same project?

Honestly, I had not thought about a horizontal version but it totally makes sense. Great idea! Adding it to the “ToDo” list. We will try to come up with the box dimensions both in the Imperial (for the US) as well as Metric (the rest of the sane World) systems.

May 14, 2024 at 6:23 am #53948Sweet! Not I have to build them too š¤£
On a side note, I am working on an Eminence 215 unsing the textreme driver. Should be pretty killer. It would be awesome if they were done near the same time. I’m loving this idea!

I know you loved yours when you did a build video of the SS 15. Hack, I am going to build two of these for my new music listening area, away from the HT. If memory serves right, SS 215 will eliminate the need of a dedicated sub altogether.
-
These would not replace the dedicated LFE channel sub at all. The design intention is to extend the low frequency capability of the front stage (or the full 5/7/9 channel surround bed if your a real baller) to be a true full range speaker eliminating the need for any form of bass management. The .1 lfe channel still requires dedicate subwoofer(s) to handle that low frequency content

May 14, 2024 at 8:43 pm #53954I absolutely love the Soundstage 15 speakers. They really sound great and are well enveloping. Having said that, the f3 is around 46 hertz and designed to be flat. So depending on what type of music you listent o and how low you want to go in bass, a sub might be desired for two channel music. Having said that, the Soundstage 125s are still my choice for two channel music. I absolutely love them. And as @Chedwin said, I would always use a subwoofer with a dedicated multi channel surround system.
-
From memory my dual 15 design hits an F3 of 19hz because itās an active crossover between the original mid bass 15ā and my added subwoofer 15ā in a single cabinet. So actually @Nate you correct for a music playback only setup they wouldnāt need a dedicated sub as well. Any sort of mixed music and HT or HT only dedicate lfe sub is needed for even more bass

May 14, 2024 at 9:43 pm #53958Nick, How am I supposed to ever stay satisfied with my theater when you keep announcing these new, AMAZING build ideas?!
These will be made with the Textreme using the horn that can be rotated 90 degrees for use as a center channel right?

Perfect.
I would receive my DIY kit for building my CNC kit from Maslow by then. I wanna put it to good use and the Soundstage 215 seems like a perfect first project.
I know Josh mentioned that I would be fine without a CNC machine but I really want to use it š Hack, I may build my Audience 212 boxes using the Baltic Birch plywood and Maslow CNC! The Desktop speakers “Overnight Sensations” build is next!

Is it just me or does this bracing look like hieroglyphs straight from an Alien spaceship š Ok, no more! We shall keep this thread clean and the posts, related to the subject.
Those curved cuts look like they better be done with a CNC for a precise cut & look. Or maybe I should wait for more details first!

I dont have a problem with some ammount of having fun posts on this thread just lets keep them in post replies so the main post feed stays clean š
You can absolutely cut them accurately enough with a steady handed jigsaw, even a hack saw if you really wanted too. You wont see them when fully assembled and your only scutting away material to make the internal air volume close enough to correct(ish)
-
the shapes come from calulated but not full CAD sim maths calculations of where braces touch the outer walls vs dimmentions of outer wall sections vs frequencies expected to be resonating in that area of the cabinet. They are not symetrical vertically but they do have enough wiggle room in cut dimmentions that you dont have to CNC cut them to achieve the final cabinet voicing
-
Resurecting this thread as Ive found all the original design and assembly instructions for my SS215 19hz tower monstrosities!!!
Need to revalidate the cabinet design then can share proper details about it (without sharing the full design for free of course š)
