I’ve been quiet lately – lots of work and taxes and house needs… well, sometimes life drags you by the cajones away from all the fun.

Tonight we ended up watching Rush’s Last Hurrah | Time Stand Still, which we saw in theaters back when it came out , the year after they retired from touring and before Neil passed.

I’ve been getting by with just the TV speakers and a cheap soundbar, but this viewing has just made me sick with the mediocre sound I’m getting. Yeah, the soundbar is louder and for the most part sounds better, but with just a itty-bitty 5 volt supply, it is just not up to the task.

So, I’ve had a 5.1 surround in a box that has lost it’s volume control, and I will be tearing it apart later this summer to see if it can be salvaged, but in the meantime, I will be going through some of my old back stock and putting together at least a stereo pair with amp that will deal with some of the problems of my system. Namely, whatever comes through the HDMI from the cable box is god-awful low in signal. Full bore is about as loud as hushed talking, while any other input is about as loud as 16 watts should be (that’s why I bought the TV, plus it had many inputs I needed).

I’ll update you when I get back to storage to see what I can do with what I have.

I am looking forward to this! I will say this, I always wonder when someone says that they didn’t like a movie (say for example Pacific Rim), is if they watched it on their television. By the way, I just realized that is only $5 on Amazon shipped to your house. How do they do it that cheap? Back to my point. Movies like that or even Interstellar completely change when you listen to it with great sound. It is not like either movie is terrible without it (well it might). But the sound completely transforms a movie to help you get sucked in. I remember going to the theater to watch Pacific Rim and their subwoofers were not working correctly (I think they blew them). I left thinking, this movie stunk! Then I ended up buying it on 3D (mainly because it got such great 3d marks. When I listened to it in my theater with working subwoofers, I absolutely loved the movie! And still do. And with movies like Interstellar, the music will completely envelop you to where you get sucked right in. I can’t even imagine watching that movie without great sound. In fact, I refuse to watch it without surround sound.

I’ve been upgrading / modifying to suit needs, TV sound since my time as a “yute”. Headboard speakers to not bother others at night, better external speakers wired into the TV, stereo output when stereo was finally available, and finally surround sound. But as you saw above, stuff just was never quite reliable. And the fact that I just have a really old house that has no real good spot to set up TV, let alone Cinema. The TV has to sit in a corner due to all the openings and other obstructions, as well as where the furniture actually fits. Such is the life of a Victorian style 1/2 a double house. Really, the best sound is actually stereo at the TV. Surround placement is dictated by other obstacles I have to take into account and where I can actually place them. Never been satisfied with it.

We’ll see what ultimately happens. Still giving it a shot.

I was just thinking about this and my particular situation really lends itself only to sound situated “around” the media screen. 2 or 2.1 would be the logical choice, but what about 3.1? LCR.Sub, no rears. I suppose I could go with 2.1 setup and “sum/band limit” for a center, or would some such thing not be worth it?

Or maybe go with a 5.1 and put small swivel speakers on top of the mains in order to bounce off the walls/ceiling to help achieve the rear surround effect.

    Just thinking OOTB.

    **Edit

I was looking around and no one makes a 3.1, not even in the weird and wonderful place of AliExpress. That is, unless I just don’t have the right search term. 😁
