Hello! My name is Pat. I live in Maine. I’ve been into HiFi since I was a kid listening to CDs (like when they first came out) on my dad’s Snell type C’s with Carver amps. Started out in “DIY” by building a car subwoofer box to JL Audio spec in the early 2000’s. Somehow found my way to zaphaudio.com circa 2010. Built the Bargain Aluminum MTMs (pretty sweet), the ZD5s (WOW), and the full range B3N (meh).
Recently decided to try to start rolling my own. I read the LDC cover to cover, re-read a bunch of John Krutke’s, Paul Carmody’s, and David Ralph’s speaker building sites.
So, needless to say, my head is kind of spinning and I’m trying to figure out where to start. I’ve downloaded and started playing with Jeff Bagby’s PCD. I have a umik-1 and a DATS on order so i can do some measurement. I was thinking of doing a 2 way using maybe a Dayton RS paper midwoofer (because they look cool) and an SB acoustics tweeter (because i haven’t heard anything SB yet) driver budget ~$150-200. I love Scan Speak because of the ZD5’s, but know I would just make them sound terrible. =P
Hopefully you guys like noob questions!
Welcome!
Sounds like you have a fairly good background in at least building and also on the research end. I think what you will find the more you dive into it is that it’s more about making decisions based on the specific constraints that you place most important, rather than a mysticism perpetuated by manufacturers. So come and settle in, we’ll help you wherever we can.
@polyrhythmic81 We love noob questions. Fire away. Heck we will help walk you through your first build step by step. Let us know if you have questions about drivers working together, we can help you narrow it down.
