September 23, 2023 at 7:33 pm #51456I just got The Ultimea Thor T60 in for review. This is my first UST projector and I am definitely amazed with the picture quality. I’ve paired it with a Vivdstorm S Pro floor rising screen with Ambient Light Rejecting technology and I am really impressed that I can actually use it with the lights on. I’ll get to more about it as I go. For now, here is the short of it

September 23, 2023 at 7:35 pm #51457Set the Ultimea Thor T60 up for testing in my living room. I totally underestimated the size of a 100″ screen in my living room!

September 23, 2023 at 7:36 pm #51458First Impressions
I am not a professional calibrator. But I thought I would give you my results. I measured from the laser source and got 3950 Lumens and 4138 contrast ratio. Having said that, I am not sure those are accurate. This is my first time with this type of projector and I got various readings and some made no sense at all. So I definitely would not take these as the projector is doing as advertised. Because my confidence level with those numbers is low. However, I have a much higher confidence level for giving you the contrast I read off the screen. In my theater room, I got anywhere from 2500-2800 contrast ratio off the Vividstorm screen. I think if I continue to tinker, it can get higher than that. Ultimea also said they will be offering high contrast screen for sale when they launch.
Over the next few days, I’ll upload some images. Just keep in mind when a camera takes a picture of these laser projectors, there is a very prominent red shift. So some editing has to be done. It will never be perfect and will never be a true 1 to 1. But it will be as close as I can get with my calibrated monitor. I hope it helps. If there is anything in particular you want to see, let me know.
Also I will be posting pictures of it with and without lights on. Below is my assessment so far.
Ambient Light Test
In my Theater room the image barely changes with the lights completely on or off. Please keep in mind this is a light controlled room and the lights are not the highest wattage. So some of that also has to do with the ALR screen from Vividstorm. Which is actually a really great screen. I know @ProjectionHead sells it and he might even have better screens for it as well. Having said that, I have been very happy with it in my theater room even with the lights on. In fact, it was the first time I could really enjoy 3D with the lights on. More on 3D later. My living room is a different story. So far, I have only test this on my built-in mantle, which really is not and ideal placement. First the screen is way too close to the ceiling, which is greatly hindering the ALR performance. Second it is right next to a window that is the same height, also really hindering the ALR performance. It is honestly much higher than most people would have it. I haven’t measured it, but the bottom of the screen is probably at least 4′ off the ground. And the top of the screen is probably about 8″ from the 9′ ceiling. Definitely not ideal placement for this type of screen. A fresnel screen would be a better option for my placement. Either way, tomorrow I plan to move it to the ground just to test to see if there is a difference.
But for now, I will say this, even in the imperfect position it was completely watchable with all the lights on. I should mention my living room is very bright and we rarely ever use the lights during the daytime, as it is unnecessary, even with the blinds down. Especially watching football and bright content like the movie Cars. However when I put on darker HDR content like Black Panther during the night scenes, it was noticeably washed out. I’ll get pictures later. Some of I believe has to do with the placement. I’ll know more when I test it later.
3D
This uses DLP link 3D glasses. Thankfully I saved my old pairs from my old BenQ projector. They worked flawlessly with this projector. I have always said I would never get rid of my JVC projector because the 3D was so good. This projector is going to make a liar of me. I was blown away by the 3D on this. One of the reasons I never wanted to get rid of the JVC was due to all the adjustments it had. This doesn’t have any except, on/off and eye switch. Oddly enough with the glasses I have, I always need to switch the eyes. Now I haven’t got a chance to watch a full movie in 3D, but I have got to watch some of my favorite scenes and I was very happy with it. I think some of the reason it is so good it is due to the fact the projector can get so bright. in fact, it is the first time I can remember watching a 3D movie with the lights on in the theater room. And I didn’t care that they were on.PQ
Unfortunately I can’t fully test this like I can with other projectors, as I do not have the necessary equipment to test this properly. Having said that, i felt there was a large red shift on both screens I tested out. Also the sharpness was too high. The good news, is there are quite a bit of adjustments on this. Once I properly set the brightness, contrast and turned down the red gain, I was very happy with how it looked. In fact, watching a movie like cars, where the amount of colors this projector can display was jaw dropping. I have never seen anything quite like it. That is not to say it is perfect, it isn’t. No projector or television is. Overall, I don’t want to judge this completely just yet, as I really haven’t spent enough time with it. But my basic first impressions are that I am very happy with the picture quality on movies like Cars, Sonic, Pacific Rim, etc. I am still dialing it in for darker movies. So I don’t have an opinion on that quite yet.Screen Material
I tested this with two different screens. The first is a Seymour AV Center Stage UF acoustically transparent screen and the second is the Vividstorm. Before I tell you my results, it is important to know that this is my first UST, so I can’t tell you how it differs from others. I know it is said you can use any screen with and UST, and obviously that is true. However, my Seymour Av screen did not give me the results I was looking for. I got considerably less contrast reading off the screen and worse black level. It is possible that if I kept messing with that screen I could have got better contrast and been happy with it. However, it wasn’t until I got the Vividstorm in that I felt this projector really came to life. It was, in my opinion, a pretty significant difference. That is all I have for now. Let me know what other questions you might have or specific scenes you might want to see on it.
