Voxel Sub Front Firing Plans – Use 1/2 inch MDF for the slot port?

Hello.
I will build the Voxel Sub Front Firing as my first DIY audio project. so I just bought the plans for it.
I noticed it uses 1/4 inch MDF for the slot port. Could I use 1/2 inch MDF instead? I would keep the original slot port height, I would just move everything up a bit.
Would it change the performance much? Is 1/4 a must?
