Wavecor Tower with Powered Subwoofer

Well I forgot to post my progress, looks like I’ll still need to do that.  But in the meantime, I thought I would show off the soon to be front baffle.  It will use 2.5″ thick walnut and will have a solid black epoxy river down the middle.  Here is the walnut I plan to use.

Thanks @oneway I am really excited about this build.  Not so excited about carrying it though.  This will be heavy!  I am planing on using the 6 1/2″ Glass Fiber Midwoofer their 30mm Tweeter and an 8.5″ subwoofer with a 250w powered amplifier. By the way, last year at MWAF, I picked up one ot those amplifiers for $20.  It was a steal! I did a brief video of the drivers here:

and tested them here.  They are really easy to work with and sound great.

Interestingly, I tested two glass fiber woofers recently.  The Wavecor and the Dayton Audio Esoteric.  The Esoteric I tested in a vented enclosure and the Wavecor in a sealed.  Even though the Esoteric is more, I would lean toward to Wavecor. They are just so easy to work with.  Having said that, in my Eso 7– is only a 4 part crossover on the woofer.  So that part isn’t that expensive.  It just might be harder for a beginner to use.

P.S. I’ll add pictures later, but my hard drive with them on it failed.  So I am still trying to recover them.  And my camera is being sent off this weekend for service.  The internal flash hasn’t worked since the first month I got it.

I’ll be interested in seeing how it turns out and your opinion on it. I have the 6.5 paper cone wavecor drivers but haven’t finished the build yet but have the 30mm tweeter with the 4.5 paper cone and love how they sound so I expect to be equally pleased with the 6.5. 

that is a great deal on that amp. I picked up one a while back referb for 84 for a build I did for my brother. Using it with a labc 12. I was really surprised at how well it did. The box is ported so it’s efficient but I have the sa1000 on my set up so I wasn’t expecting a whole lot from it. He has a fairly large open room but the combination was enough to give it pretty good feel without having to put the enclosure in a corner. The amp sounds great. Big D wiz did an amp dyno  on you tube with that amp and a 300 watt young a year or so ago.
I’ve seen both those videos. I think I’ve seen most of your vids…👍

I figured you had 😉  But just in case you or someone else was curious.  I did build a small bookshelf just to make sure they would mesh well.  I love them.  They are so clean and clear.  I could not be happier with them.

yeah they are pretty sweet. Sometimes ya really do get what you pay for.

I’m looking forward to this build as well. I am very curious to try epoxy on a build some day as well. Seems to machine very well and when done properly looks fantastic. 

In regard to the SPA250 amp, they are great A/B amps that sound great in my experience. I also have the older SA240 that I have been using for years with similar results. I have powered a UM18 with one and was very impressed with the output.

Thanks.  I am finishing up the Uglies first.  I am currently gluing up a test box on the Uglies, that way I can run some sweeps.  Then I plan to move to this project.  I want to be very proficient with pouring Epoxy before I pour this.  I have already learned a lot.  Such as line the box you are pouring the Epoxy in with house wrap tape (epoxy doesn’t stick to it.  Seal around the wood with caulk so to make sure it doesn’t creep underneath the wood (or go anywhere you don’t want it to) and always mix more than you think you will need.  

Funny story, last year at MWAF, I picked up a returned SPA250 without a box for $20.  Couldn’t ask for a better deal. But I completely agree, I really enjoy those amplifiers.

So I put this on hold for a while and am coming back to it.  Mainly, I just wasn’t get the response and power handling from the Wavecor sub I desired.  It appears that sub would probably best work as a passive three-way than subwoofer.  So I decided to switch it to a bookshelf speaker.  I have already been listening to them for a while now and I must say, I am very impressed!  The best sound bookshelf speaker that I have built to date.  There is something really special about these.  I am hoping to have a pair finished by the end of the month.  But I am moving this to a new topic.

I was having trouble figuring out a good ported design for the sub portion. Luckily I came across a buyout passive radiator, that works perfectly. I’ve been testing it there last few days, and so far I’m very happy with it.
