That’s why I was looking for lower powered drivers with higher SPL levels (I’m so glad PE added those sliders). Really, I could have pushed the bottom SPL up higher and the power lower. That should give you the type of performance you are looking for, but usually at the expense of less lower end, which is actually vital in a lot of the registers you mentioned – the harmonics and resonances that can accompany some of those instruments and lower voices can reach fairly low or have a component that needs a initial low bite.

My very first home built speakers were 4″ single drivers, and those little buggers gave me some great sound for many years (never should have given them away) running through an old all in one stereo. It was a great bedroom system. Loud enough, decent enough low end (for it’s size in the late 70’s) and seriously clear – lots of Dan Folgelberg, Loggins and Messina, Seals and Croft, Rush, Zeppelin, VH, and way more through them.

So dig in and sort through. Since you want bookshelf / nearfield, add in from 3-1/2″ to 6-1/2″ (my choice, you can expand or retract), high sensitivity (88 dB+), power from lowest to ??20W??, and probably 8 ohm just to keep your output transformer happy. Take a look at the specs of the ones that catch your eye and if they have a FRD graph, check that out too. Pick some stuff out and make a list of links. I’d be happy to lend my 2ยข.
