    Hey,

hello everyone. We are currently extending our house and there will be an area where I can put a big screen (100-120″) and surround sound. My wife does not like the look of tower speakers and I was hoping for something better than a soundbar so as we are building I can put everything in the walls. I came across Toid with the Klipsch in wall speaker build and it got me thinking about what I could do.

Firstly whilst I have watched a lot of YouTube video’s I’m nervous about even starting. I get it but it feels like a massive undertaking; do i try to build the “Rule breaker” to get some confidence? The main reason why DIY Audio is attractive is because the wall where the screen will be is 3.7 x 2.3m which we can build a frame provide the space for the speakers but would want to minimise the depth hence customer enclosure sizes. I.e. the 12″ for the Klipsch BTS 15s is great but a sub box of 12″ would need to be very custom. Hope that makes sense.

Not sure about whether it’s a 100″ TV or 120″ UST screen yet. The walls are up and the roof, skylights and sliding doors will be done by the end of March so we can assess the ambient light and decide. Then either it’s the soundbar of boredom or design a wall with LCR and sub x 2 that will be the minimum depth.

The other big question is can I put the rear surround in the ceiling and have an amp do some atmos jiggery pokery to make them seem to be behind?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and help.

I would gather that you are going to orient your screen at the 2.3m end of the room. Have I guessed correctly? About how far do you think you’ll build out that wall? Just trying to get an idea of the actual working space.

Doing “the google” for actual screen sizes, it looks like.you’ll be using the 3.7m side for the screen. That’ll put you pretty close to the screen after a false wall and seating. Are you sure of those dimensions? Here’s a viewing distance to maximum tv size calculator: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship

Thanks for the reply. It’s the wall that is the dimensions not the room.

With the 120” inch screen (2.65×1.5m) or the 100” screen (2.2×1.25m) it’ll leave around 1.1-1.5×0.8-1 the screen. Obviously it’ll be closer to the ceiling than the floor. But for the side speakers there would be 55-75cm to put a speaker and probably 75cm below for centre and or bass.

Not sure I explained well the room is 8.8m long and no plan to change that except where the screen is then create a frame to sink the tv is and also have in wall speakers. I was considering around 30-50cm but that’ll depend on the enclosure sizes. Hence it’ll only shorted the room a bit. Hope that clears that up.

The nervous feeling is completely normal. I know I was in the same boat not too long ago. After building a 7.2.5 speakers system myself, I can confidently say that anyone can build good speakers, initial jitters notwithstanding. If you follow the build plans, you should be fine. In my case, I built the surround speakers first. I first built two of them, gained confidence & built the next two like a pro 🙂

One of the hurdles I faced was not being familiar with some of the tools like a circle jig with a router. The trick is to take your time, practice & be comfortable with the tools. You can follow the link and scroll down to the post (titled “The Practice Piece”) where I made a practice piece, just to get the hang of it: https://toidsdiyaudio.com/forums/discussion/the-home-theater-build-code-named-tht/page/7/

If you come across any questions, feel free to post them here. I am sure you will get help here! Good luck with your build.
