Thanks for the reply, and yes that make sense. I too am from the Commodore64 days. What has peaked my interest is the recent discontinuation of the Tectonic BMR and other drivers over that few years. There are so many cool speaker designs that have become obsolete just because you cannot get the drivers they were designed around. I will grab that book.
I was just on the Parts Express website and the key BMR for this speaker is “No Longer Available”
So first, does anyone have contacts to see if this is temporary or a permanent discontinuation?
Secondly, Is anyone willing to revisit this design with a replacement driver for the BMR that is now unattainable? The other BMRs that are still for sale do not have the same curves so the crossovers will need to be reworked.
Sad because I was just getting ready to build a set for my son.
It is an input connection. The connector is a legacy CD-ROM audio cable from the days when we had SoundBlaster sound cards and early Pentium CPUs. Anyway you should be able to still find that connector. RME Audio – VKCD – CD-Rom Audio Cable (neobits.com) Most cables are 4 pin but I found this 3 pin for you. I had one from yesteryear because I save stuff like that. Works just fine.
Ok, new question. The design has the BMR centered and centered. Does the BMR also break the tweeter placement “rules” of needing to be offset? And in the case of this speaker design (The Rule Breaker) would raising the BMR, say level with the mids, upset the sound design of the project?
I used 3/4 inch MDF because I already had remanent. Take a look at my other post, I put pictures of my progression in it. The design uses 1/2 inch material. As for the wood, I used thick (3./16th inch) veneer apple wood from a tree in my yard. That had been sitting in my shop for about 4 years. In the end, building the housing with end cuts presented is a pain to finish nice. If you build a box with mitered corners it will finish much easier. I just wanted something more unique looking than a box.
Templates were key. Built the plans enclosure then filled with sand to measure the volume and correct the volume of the modified enclosure. Made the wood veneer from some applewood from our yard. Put the crossover external to the speaker. I can access it if I ever wanted to make a modification or repair by removing the rear panel.

All finished! Hope you like the way it turned out. I even found a way to credit TOIDS. Sadly, I don’t get to enjoy it long, I made it as a gift for my brother-in-law.
I have more build pictures if anyone wants to see them (no CNC or laser used)
Next one is for me!!!

Thank you. I will post a picture when I am finished. So far I have been making templates and an enormous amount of research. Not that I need another obsession, uh, I mean, hobby!. A question that has popped up is if I put the crossover inside of the speaker enclosure, will that significantly reduce the enclosure volume recommended for the speaker? And if the crossover is moved external to the speaker enclosure, will that have a negative effect on the design performance? Since the Rule Breaker has such a small volume unlike a tower….
Ok, I understand, I asked totally NOOB questions. Further research on my part has answered or at least enlightened me at to the path of answers. As to the Impedance question, it complicated. From what I gather looking at the crossover schematic the design specs are 4 Ohms. I may have to add resistors to modify but I am extremely worried about changing the design. From what I gather, I “should” be OK according to multiple YouTubers. As to component design questions, after looking into Xsim and others, the choices are what they are for cost focus. as much as audio quality results. Not even Electrical Engineers want to do the math if they don’t have to.
If anyone has any other input on this build – TIPS AND TRICKS – I would appreciate it. Otherwise I apologize for showing in public my shear NOOBNESS on this subject.
